A broadcast news rundown (AKA: a show rundown or news rundown) is the master plan or script for a live news program.
It helps the crew stay in sync by outlining everything that happens in the newscast.
Professional stations use software like iNews, ENPS, or Rundown Creator. In class, a table in a Google Doc works for practice.
Every station will have their own unique way of formatting their rundowns.
Segment Number: Order of the story (e.g., A1, A2, A3...)
Time/Duration: How long the segment runs (e.g., 0:30, 1:15)
Type/Format: The type of story (e.g., ANCHOR READ, VO, etc.)
Slug: Short title or description of the story (e.g., “School Lunch Changes”)
Talent: Who is speaking? (e.g., Anchor 1, Reporter, Weather)
Content: Brief description of what happens in the segment
Script Notes: Specific lines, technical instructions, or camera shots
ANCHOR READ: Anchor reads script on camera—no video
VO (Voice-Over): Anchor reads over footage
VOSOT: Voice-over plus soundbite
PKG (Package): Pre-recorded report with interviews, narration, etc.
LIVE: Reporter is live on location
TAG: A short ending after a package or story
KICKER: Light or feel-good story at the end

On the document, there is a Rundown table and a Script. You are working on a 2-minute broadcast. The script has been finalized and now you need to make the rundown.
Describe each of the sections in 1-3 words in the "Slug (Descriptor)" column
Write down who is in the section (Both / Gavin / Cody) in the "Talent" column.
The first two sections have been filled in for you already as an example.
Open the clock app on your iPad and start the stopwatch and start reading the script.
Click the lap button when you move to a new section in the script.
If you got within a few seconds of 2-minutes, continue:
If you are over/under by more than 15 seconds, re-try and slow or speed up.
Write down the duration, start and end times for each of the 8 sections of the script. See the example to the right:
