Click "Make a copy"
Go to the News Stories folder: "Google Drive" > "Shared drives" > "Media Design & Production" > "SUMMATIVE Script Rundown"
Choose 3 stories:
1 hard news story
1 hard/soft transition story
1 soft story
Decide on a News Station Name
Your name goes next to Director
Decide what time you want your news segment at
The date of your news is April 29, 2025 (don't change)
Decide on the names of your anchors
Now move onto your script:
Write a brief welcome and tease 1–2 top stories at the start of the script.
Examples:
"Anchor 1: My name’s Anchor 1 and joining me here today is my Co-Host Anchor 2. Welcome Anchor 2.
Anchor 2: Thank you for having me, Anchor 1. Coming up—new changes in school lunch menus, a record-breaking season for the track team, and what students are binge-watching right now.”
For each of your chosen stories, write:
Lead sentence (what’s the news?)
Details (1–2 sentences max)
Quote or soundbite (optional, short)
Wrap-up or transition to next story
Make sure your segment is 30-40 words.
Example: “The school cafeteria will debut new plant-based options next week. Staff say it’s part of a push for healthier meals. Student Taylor Green says, ‘It’s about time we had more variety!’ The full menu will be posted Friday.”
Adjust your story order so it flows from the most important/urgent hard news first and ends with the most fun/lighter stories.
Figure out which story is the best in-between story that can be your transition from hard stories to soft stories.
Label each story with either Anchor #1 or Anchor #2 (switch back and forth)
At the start of each story add simple signposts to keep it smooth:
“In other news...”
“Meanwhile on the field…”
“Switching gears to entertainment…”
"Yes, and..."
Vary your tone: serious for hard news, relaxed for soft news.
Write a brief sign-off.
Example: “For now, I’m Jordan. And I'm Alex. Thanks for watching.”
Highlight your script and go to "Tools" > "Word count"
Check your word count next to "Words"
Check the box "Display word count while typing" and click "OK"
Edit your script until you are between 140 to 150 words.
Practice saying the script out loud and use your iPad's timer to make sure you are within a few seconds of 1 minute.
Describe each of the sections in 1-3 words in the "Slug (Descriptor)" column
Write down who is in the section in the "Talent" column.
Open the clock app on your iPad and start the stopwatch and start reading the script.
Click the lap button when you move to a new section in the script.
If you got within a few seconds of 1-minute, continue:
If you are over/under by more than 10 seconds, re-try and slow or speed up.
Or you might need to adjust your script length
Write down the duration, start and end times for each of the 5 sections of the script. See the example to the right:
